Field Trial: Stake 4 Open Qualifying Stake For English Springer Spaniels

A super day’s trialling for the Club’s Open Springer Stake at Maristow yesterday when Gary Liddle and his team provided excellent hospitality and testing conditions for the spaniels, ensuring that the winner FTCH Bucklawren Brodie, owned and handled by Simon Jones fully earned her place to the Championship in January 2017.
We started the day, and all competitors had their first runs, in a field of fodder beet which had an ample supply of game.  The guns were on the ball so that many of the flushes quickly became retrieves.  The second runs, for those spaniels still in the competition, were held on completely different ground, close to the estuary of the River Tavy, in rushes and heavy bramble. Again game was in good supply and the retrieves were very testing.
The top dogs put in a brilliant performance so that the judges, Dave Rayner and Justin Lascelles, called for a three dog run-off to confirm the final placings.  FTCH Bucklawren Brodie, Simon Jones 6 year old bitch, showed just a little more drive and pattern in her hunting to confirm first place.  Quite a record – she won our Open Stake last year and is the only competing spaniel to have won the stake in two successive years since the Club ran it’s very first Open Spaniel Field Trial in November 1998.
It’s been a great year for the Jones partnership in Club Field Trials – Anita winning our Open Cocker Stake in October with her bitch Centrewalk Willow of Episcopi.
