NOVICE AV SPANIEL COLD GAME TEST
A Novice AV Spaniel Cold Game Test on partridge, the first held by the club, proved a great success. The test was held at Hall Farm, Molland by kind permission of the Molland Estate and the Franklin family. A lovely autumn day but not too hot for the dogs or their handlers. It was pleasing to see many of the competitors taking part who had come through the summer training classes. The test was judged by Dave Kent and Alice Wise who made some very complimentary remarks about the standard of the entries at the end of the day.
The hunt up was in some lovely rushy ground with a seen retrieve of a partridge, under each judge. For some dogs this was their first experience of game in their mouths, but all successfully completed the retrieves, much to the relief of their handlers. The ground was ideal for novice dogs, light hunting cover with a clear view of marked retrieves.
A separate test involved a blind retrieve, not too far but with plenty of distraction along the way which proved the undoing of some. And to finish the day, the judges came up with a novel test with a marked retrieve over a jump, but first the dogs had to acknowledge another mark immediately behind them, before being sent for the first. Almost all cleared the jump first time and some absolutely flew back over the fence.
A very enjoyable day for all with Kit Williams running her ESS Calderbridge Buchanaille bitch taking first place and the Clum Setter and Perdiu Shield, very generously donated by Nigel and Lisa Franklin.
